Springfield Coffee House

Springfield Coffee House

Are there any Lesbian or Gay friendly coffee houses in the Springfield area? I'm really not in the bar scene & I would be interested in finding a coffee house that perhaps has live music in the area. If you know of a place would you please let me know, or if you have any other suggestions.

The MudHouse & MudLounge downtown are gay-owned. While they aren't exclusively gay establishments they are both accepting locations and have mixed clientèle.

I don't know if the Magic Bean has a current incarnation, but it was also a comfortable environment.

GLO used to have a business guide to springfield... though I don't know if anyone has bothered to update it since it was published in the late 90s...

Oh, and there's a coffee shop on Commercial St that I've visited a few times and I know of several people in the neighborhood who frequent it.

Good luck on finding a place that's a good fit for you!

Big Momma's is the name of the Commercial Street coffee house. It is nice. It's on the "nice block" of Commercial Street, just east of Boonville Ave.

My other favorite is The Coffee Ethic. It's new and mod with organic coffees and connected to a new branch of the Springfield public library. Once my partner and I got cruised there which was hilarious! It's on Park Central Square, around the corner from MudHouse (which, though gay-owned and awesome, has a lot of Bible-studiers, bless their hearts, and sometimes I like to skip that crowd).

Nonna's isn't a coffee house, but it is also a gay-owned establishment. Nonna's features an open mic night every Sunday evening -- each Sunday is a different genre ranging from Broadway tunes to Art Songs to Opera. There is often a featured singer on Sundays, but they are usually happy to give up the mic if you want to showcase your voice. You can also go just to listen.

Though Nonna's is a full-service restaurant (with incredible Italian cuisine made by Chef Marty), they don't frown on people visiting for coffee and dessert -- just be sure to tip your wait staff well, as many of them are students (a number of them theatre students from MSU).

It doesn't matter if the glass is half empty or half full -- as long as there are free refills. -- Melissa Postnikoff
